Corpus of Seal Inscriptions of the Kassite Period Including Old Babylonian Forerunners

BM 130697, Courtesy of the Trustees of the British Museum

A comprehensive corpus of Kassite period seal inscriptions and related types. Director: Jon Taylor. Collaborators: Zsombor Földi, Enrique Jiménez, Ignacio Márquez-Rowe, Alexa Bartelmus.

The Corpus of Seal Inscriptions of the Kassite period (CSIK) gathers all known seal inscriptions from the Kassite period, together with related examples from the Late Old Babylonian, Middle Assyrian, and Middle Elamite periods. CSIK includes both cylinder seals themselves and ancient impressions preserved on clay. It updates and expands Limet's classic Les légendes des sceaux cassites (1971). The number of texts known is now four times what is presented there.

The corpus has grown out of work by Taylor during preparation of the British Museum's Catalogue of the Western Asiatic seals in the British Museum. Cylinder seals 4: The Second Millennium BC Beyond Babylon [https://www.britishmuseumshoponline.org/cylinder-seals-iv-the-second-millennium-bc.html] (2016). This was supplemented by work conducted by Alexa Bartelmus during research towards her dissertation, now published as Fragmente einer grossen Sprache: Sumerisch im Kontext der Schreiberausbildung des kassitenzeitlichen Babylonien [https://www.degruyter.com/view/serial/468826] (2016). Jiménez has contributed editions of the seals in the Yale Babylonian Collection. Földi has contributed editions of Old Babylonian "seal prayers".
